We currently operate a large scale Japanese language courses for foreigners living in Japan, with students from about 45 countries enrolled, and the majority of students are learning Japanese for business purposes. In addition, a large number of students from overseas also attend classes via online.

TCJ offers education from students with no Japanese language skills to those with JLPT N1 or above. The scope of study includes not only four Japanese language skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), but also vocabulary that is frequently used in business situations, usage of Japanese according to the situations faced in actual work, honorific and humble language, and business manners.

Our professional Japanese language teachers have been carefully selected to help foreign business persons improve their Japanese language skills within a shorter period of time.

2. Top level teacher quality

TCJ's original education management with extensive quality control

TCJ offers a Japanese language teacher training course that has one of the highest numbers of graduates in Japan. TCJ offers a high quality Japanese language education curriculum based on its know how cultivated through teacher training, and carefully selects and hires highly skilled and motivated Japanese language teachers from among the 300 students who complete the training course each year.

TCJ has developed its own competency model for Japanese language teaching, based on our solid educational capabilities developed over many years of training teachers.

Based on the competency model, we regularly monitor all of our teachers' classes to maintain and improve the quality of education. Furthermore, we collect quarterly feedbacks from the students regarding the content of the lessons provided by the teachers, and provide feedback to all teachers.

TCJ has more than 100 professional Japanese language teachers, and all of them are ready to provide the highest quality Japanese language education.

3. OUTPUT-based lessons to improve communication skills and cross-cultural understanding

Curriculum aiming to improve the skills of four Japanese language skills

It is necessary to comprehensively improve the four Japanese language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing in order for foreigners to settle down and become active in Japan.

TCJ provides comprehensive support for foreign business persons in Japan by providing three types of classes in the basic curriculum: a written test preparation class to improve language literacy, a communication class to improve language skills, and a social class to improve cross-cultural understanding.

Teaching Method to Promote Rapid Acquisition of Japanese Language skill.

  1. TCJ's teaching method is the Direct Method, which teaches Japanese in Japanese. By not using the students' mother tongue, TCJ helps them get used to Japanese quickly and acquire the habit of thinking and using Japanese.

  2. We always aim for output-oriented learning in lessons, where the students speak at least 70% of the total. By encouraging students to produce a lot of output, practical Japanese can be acquired quickly.

  3. We also encourage collaborative learning to create synergy among students. It encourages students to ask questions and explain to each other.

  4. The teacher motivates the students and provides coaching-style support to help them reach their learning goals.

4. Visualization of achievement through comprehensive assessment of Japanese language skills

Appropriate and regular assessments are essential for checking learning achievement. TCJ has developed our own Can-do lists for the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing, based on the levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and the CEFR (JF Standard), and uses them to accurately assess learners' Japanese language skills.

In addition to regular academic tests, students and teachers evaluate each other using a list to objectively grasp student's current level of achievement, especially in the area of "speaking ability," which is most important in the business situation. Teachers also provide learning advice to each students through feedback regularly.

Q: How did you decide to choose
our school as a partner?

A: After gathering information on several Japanese language schools and meeting with a person in charge at the school, we decided that Tokyo Central Japanese Language School's study policy and curriculum were clear, and that the school's basic principles of proficiency in the four skills (speaking, listening, writing, and reading) were suitable for the students themselves. As a result, we decided to request Tokyo Central Japanese Language School to provide the service.

Q: What are your impressions
since you started
taking courses at our school?

A: TCJ provides regular seminars for corporate staff, which are helpful because they give advice on the attitude of the company accepting foreign employees as well as that of Japanese employees. Also, the regular study reports help us to understand the level of proficiency of the students. It has been four months since she enrolled in the program, and due to her efforts, her Japanese language skills have clearly improved since the time she joined the company, and we hope she will continue her studies.

Q: Please give a message to companies
that are considering supporting
Japanese language study
for their foreign employees.

A: We receive a variety of support and advice on how to support Japanese language learning for foreign employees, including seminars for corporate staff, which we view as an opportunity for both the participants themselves and the hosting staff to be stimulated, and for the company to grow as well.We hope that the participants will be able to become future leaders in the company by learning the four skills of Japanese language, not only specialized skills, but also the company's business policy and culture.

Mess of Foreign Businesspeople in Japan Studying at TCJ

R.R From India

As a tax accountant, I advise companies on mergers and acquisitions (M&A). I came to Japan in 2013 as an expatriate, and now, a few years later, I work in accounting at a Japanese company.

Until 2020, I had never seriously studied Japanese. The pandemic gave me the time to reflect on myself and work on improving my skills. My dream is to be able to speak fluent Japanese for daily life. Then, I would like to gradually move to the business level.

TCJ has the most flexible class hours, especially in the evenings (7:00-9:00 PM), which is perfect for a working person like me. Also, the management team is very understanding of each student's priorities and needs. Most importantly, the "student's normal work" is given top priority.

Each student is treated with respect and given individual attention. The location is also very convenient (only 30 seconds from the Shinanomachi station gates on the Chuo-Sobu line).

D.Z from Canada

I came to Japan last year because of my husband‘s job transfer. Since I have no knowledge of Japanese, it became urgent for me to brush up my Japanese. I am currently doing some freelance work online on my own.

In terms of professional development, I would like to work for an international marketing or PR firm in the future. I have a degree in Food Science and I am fluent in English and Chinese. Ideally, I would like to use my language skills to become an international business liaison with a focus on sustainability.

With my knowledge of Japanese, I believe I will be able to gain a more comprehensive understanding of Japanese culture. Of course, it will also make my daily life in Tokyo easier. For me, the most important thing in learning a language is to set small, achievable goals.

And when you achieve those small goals, celebrate them. Learning a new language is hard, and we all need to keep our own pace when it comes to language learning. There is no need to compare yourself to others or be discouraged by how much progress others are making.

As long as you stay focused on your goals and execute your plan, you are on the right path to success. TCJ offers a wide variety of classes to meet the diverse needs of students, not only in terms of Japanese language proficiency level. In addition, online courses are also available, which has allowed me to have more flexibility in my daily life!

A.J from US

After graduating from college with a degree in International Relations, I moved to Japan in 2017 and since then I have been working as an actor as well as an English teacher.

I've taught English to students from kindergarten to college, and I've loved every second of it! Living a new life abroad is not easy, but it is a very fun adventure. I am currently enjoying my job as a teacher very much, but I am looking forward to accomplishing much more.

I would also like to gain valuable experience in the field of business and diplomacy, and in order to do so, it is very important for me to be able to speak fluent Japanese. I would like to impress the people around me with my strong Japanese language skills, and I would also like to learn how to negotiate in Japanese.

I've been to a few other schools before, but the staff at TCJ is the nicest I've encountered. TCJ truly cares about education and wants their students to succeed. TCJ has morning, evening, and private classes that can be taken on your own schedule. I am a very busy person, so it was great that they offered an evening course in business Japanese that fit my schedule. My classmates are friendly and motivate me to learn Japanese.

Corporate Education Consulting

Japanese language support to help foreign employees to play active.

In order for foreign employees settling and play an active role in the workplace, it is essential for companies to establish a system for accepting them and provide support from human resources. In particular, Japanese language education support is important for foreign employees to be able to carry out their duties while building smooth human relationships in the workplace without worrying about their daily life.

In fact, there is a strong correlation between the level of retention and success of foreign employees and the level of Japanese language training support ①before and ②after they join a company. In TCJ's hybrid classes, employees can take online classes from their local office before they arrive in Japan, and after arriving, they can combine commuting and online classes to have comprehensive support to retention to success.

Japanese language education consulting by professional advisors

TCJ's professional advisors, who have counseled over several hundred foreign businesspeople in Japan every year and supported companies in training foreign human resources, are available for consultations with your company.

We are able to assess the level of students, recommend suitable study plans, courses and classes, and provide advice for learning for foreign students. We are also able to offer corporate training programs and Japanese language teacher training.

Based on our experiences, we can provide multifaceted support for the establishment and success of your company's foreign employees.

[A] There are two options: 1) Participate in TCJ's courses, or 2) Create an original training plan for your company. If you are considering Japanese language training for a small number of employees, we recommend to join TCJ’s current courses (1), which offers classes by level for from 1,240 yen per hour. On the other hand, if you are interested in individual group training for a group of 5 or 10 people, we can propose a curriculum for your company. In either case, please feel free to contact us.

[A] There are two important factors to consider when choosing a school: (1) whether all teachers are qualified, and (2) whether the service operator manages the quality of the teachers appropriately. All of TCJ's teachers are qualified and experienced professional Japanese language instructors. In addition, management members monitor all teachers' classes twice a year, and all students are asked to submit teacher evaluation questionnaires once every three months, and the results are fed back to the teachers.

[A] Yes, all of our courses are designed with the curriculum to prepare students for the JLPT exam. We also have optional classes that focus on JLPT exam preparation.

[A] When you join the TCJ courses, students will be asked to schedule their lessons according to the time each class is held. For business person, weekday evening courses and private lessons are popular. If you would like us to create an original training plan for your company, you can specify the days and times flexibly.

[A] Yes, TCJ offers a zero-level course for complete beginners. Many foreign businesspeople have started learning Japanese from the zero level.

[A] We recommend students to use a laptop or tablet to view the screen better.(The lessons can also be taken with a smartphone) We also ask that you take the class in a place with a good communication environment. The school will invite you to Google Classroom, where you will be able to communicate with your teachers and classmates.

[A] Most of materials are for business, but it will vary depending on your level. In addition to commercially teaching materials, TCJ's original materials and teachers' own materials will be used, and they are arranged according to students' subjects.

[A] Yes, we will provide the profile of the teacher as soon as the teacher is confirmed.

[A] It depends on the foreign employee's current level of Japanese and the target level of it, but TCJ recommends that students continue taking classes for a minimum of 6 months to a year (minimum of 80-200 hours) in order to achieve meaningful skill improvement.

[A] There is no difference at all. TCJ has been offering online classes for a long time, and we collect feedbacks from students once a quarter, and the evaluation scores of online classes are the same as face-to-face classes.

[A] Class content, handouts, homework, etc. are communicated to students through Google Classroom, so even if the students miss the class, they can still catch up on the class content. It is also possible to catch up by watching the class videos.

[A] Yes, it is possible. Generally, it takes about 800 hours to reach from N5 to N2 level, but TCJ can help you improve your Japanese skills at a faster pace than the normal. We also offer a program called “Speed Learning Private Lessons", which allows students to achieve N2 in just six months through one-on-one lessons and autonomous learning support.

[A] We have students from over 45 countries around the world. Our students come from North America, Europe, Oceania, Asia, and Latin America, so you will be able to interact with many different nationalities as classmates.

What you need to know about learning Japanese

What kind of workplaces are conducive to the retention and success of foreign businesspeople?

In the "Survey on Foreign Human Resources Working in Japan (2018)" conducted by JAPAN ASSOCIATION FOR PROMOTION OF INTERNATIONALIZATION(JAPI), it was found that the average length of service in Japan for foreign employees is only two years.

Broadly speaking, the top reasons for this fact are the same as for Japanese employees, such as dissatisfaction with treatment, human relationships with superiors or colleagues, and career development. In many cases, the reason for this is not so much about the foreign employees themselves, but rather the lack of support and systems in the workplace that accepts them.

In workplaces where foreign employees are established, (1) there is a culture and system in place that proactively supports foreign employees. In addition, the foreign employees who have established and are active in the workplace have (2) Japanese language knowledge, communication skills, and the skills to behave appropriately in a different culture.

Objective learning goals

In order to promote the retention and success of foreign employees, JLPT N2 or higher is the general target level for the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Generally speaking, it takes 600-800 hours of study to reach the JLPT N2 level, but at TCJ, we aim to achieve this level in 400-600 hours of study.

Japanese-Language Proficiency Test(JLPT)
It is the most well-known proficiency test administered in 86 countries and regions, including Japan. It is used by many educational institutions and Japanese companies as a document to prove Japanese language proficiency. The test is divided into two parts: "reading" (characters, vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension) and "listening" (listening comprehension), and answers are given on a mark-sheet format.

General level and estimated study time

Level Study hours Kanji Vocabulary Indicator
N1 900~1200 hrs. 2,000 10,000 Able to understand Japanese in different types of situation.
N2 600~800 hrs. 1,000 6,000 Not only in daily situations, but also understanding some Japanese used in a wider range of situations.
N3 450~600 hrs. 600 3,000 Able to understand Japanese used in daily situations to a certain extent
N4 300~400 hrs. 300 1,500 Able to understand basic Japanese
N5 ~150 hrs. 100 1,000 Able to understand basic Japanese to a certain extent

Common concerns and explanations about Japanese language for foreign employees

JLPT is generally recognized, but due to the characteristics of the test content, the test only guarantees the ability of listen and reading among the four Japanese language skills. However, After they join a company and start working, they will need the ability to communicate with Japanese employees, and to write a lot of e-mails and SNS. From a business perspective, it is no exaggeration to say that speaking and writing skills are the most important abilities. It is one of the most common misconceptions that ‘Passing the JLPT= High Japanese language skills. Many TCJ students also aim to acquire the ability to speak and write through OUTPUT-oriented classes, so that they can communicate more smoothly with Japanese employees.

This may be due to their lack of basic Japanese language skills, resulting in an inability to accurately understand the content of the instructions or to fully convey the nuances of the instructions. Even if they understand the vocabulary and grammar, they will not be able to correctly understand the speaker's intentions unless they can read the actual context of the sentence, including the indicative words and tenses, and recognize the speaker's cultural background. This problem can be solved by devising a way to confirm the content of instructions when they can't understand, and by providing opportunities to relearn basic Japanese skills.

Even if they already have a high level of Japanese language skills, there are many foreign employees who left their jobs because they cannot adapt well to the workplace. This is not only due to the company, but also partly due to the foreign employee's own cross-cultural adaptability (= social skills). Business manners can be interpreted as part of these social skills. In particular, in order to work in a different country, it is necessary for them to have the skills to understand different cultures, accept others, and to express themselves appropriately. TCJ offers our own social classes for foreign businesspeople to enhance their ability to understand and adjust to other people with different cultures and backgrounds, and it is provided to all students.
