(Example of learning objectives)
・Improvement of communication skills, necessary for communication with superiors/subordinates
・I want to acquire Japanese language skills for daily life so that I will not have trouble living in Japan.
・I want to be able to collaborate with other departments in Japanese.
・Even if you do not use Japanese at work, it is better to be able to speak Japanese when dealing with Japanese companies for business purposes.
・Aiming to pass the JLPT
・I want to be able to discuss with researchers at conferences in Japanese.

Curriculum aiming to improve the skills of four Japanese language skills

It is necessary to comprehensively improve the four Japanese language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing in order for foreigners to settle down and become active in Japan.

TCJ provides comprehensive support for foreign business persons in Japan by providing three types of classes in the basic curriculum: a written test preparation class to improve language literacy, a communication class to improve language skills, and a social class to improve cross-cultural understanding.

Teaching Method to Promote Rapid Acquisition of Japanese Language skill.

  1. TCJ's teaching method is the Direct Method, which teaches Japanese in Japanese. By not using the students' mother tongue, TCJ helps them get used to Japanese quickly and acquire the habit of thinking and using Japanese.

  2. We always aim for output-oriented learning in lessons, where the students speak at least 70% of the total. By encouraging students to produce a lot of output, practical Japanese can be acquired quickly.

  3. We also encourage collaborative learning to create synergy among students. It encourages students to ask questions and explain to each other.

  4. The teacher motivates the students and provides coaching-style support to help them reach their learning goals.

4. Visualization of achievement through comprehensive assessment of Japanese language skills

Appropriate and regular assessments are essential for checking learning achievement. TCJ has developed our own Can-do lists for the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing, based on the levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and the CEFR (JF Standard), and uses them to accurately assess learners' Japanese language skills.

In addition to regular academic tests, students and teachers evaluate each other using a list to objectively grasp student's current level of achievement, especially in the area of "speaking ability," which is most important in the business situation. Teachers also provide learning advice to each students through feedback regularly.

Voices from Students

Mess of Foreign Businesspeople in Japan Studying at TCJ

R.R From India

As a tax accountant, I advise companies on mergers and acquisitions (M&A). I came to Japan in 2013 as an expatriate, and now, a few years later, I work in accounting at a Japanese company.

Until 2020, I had never seriously studied Japanese. The pandemic gave me the time to reflect on myself and work on improving my skills. My dream is to be able to speak fluent Japanese for daily life. Then, I would like to gradually move to the business level.

TCJ has the most flexible class hours, especially in the evenings (7:00-9:00 PM), which is perfect for a working person like me. Also, the management team is very understanding of each student's priorities and needs. Most importantly, the "student's normal work" is given top priority.

Each student is treated with respect and given individual attention. The location is also very convenient (only 30 seconds from the Shinanomachi station gates on the Chuo-Sobu line).

D.Z from Canada

I came to Japan last year because of my husband‘s job transfer. Since I have no knowledge of Japanese, it became urgent for me to brush up my Japanese. I am currently doing some freelance work online on my own.

In terms of professional development, I would like to work for an international marketing or PR firm in the future. I have a degree in Food Science and I am fluent in English and Chinese. Ideally, I would like to use my language skills to become an international business liaison with a focus on sustainability.

With my knowledge of Japanese, I believe I will be able to gain a more comprehensive understanding of Japanese culture. Of course, it will also make my daily life in Tokyo easier. For me, the most important thing in learning a language is to set small, achievable goals.

And when you achieve those small goals, celebrate them. Learning a new language is hard, and we all need to keep our own pace when it comes to language learning. There is no need to compare yourself to others or be discouraged by how much progress others are making.

As long as you stay focused on your goals and execute your plan, you are on the right path to success. TCJ offers a wide variety of classes to meet the diverse needs of students, not only in terms of Japanese language proficiency level. In addition, online courses are also available, which has allowed me to have more flexibility in my daily life!

A.J from US

After graduating from college with a degree in International Relations, I moved to Japan in 2017 and since then I have been working as an actor as well as an English teacher.

I've taught English to students from kindergarten to college, and I've loved every second of it! Living a new life abroad is not easy, but it is a very fun adventure. I am currently enjoying my job as a teacher very much, but I am looking forward to accomplishing much more.

I would also like to gain valuable experience in the field of business and diplomacy, and in order to do so, it is very important for me to be able to speak fluent Japanese. I would like to impress the people around me with my strong Japanese language skills, and I would also like to learn how to negotiate in Japanese.

I've been to a few other schools before, but the staff at TCJ is the nicest I've encountered. TCJ truly cares about education and wants their students to succeed. TCJ has morning, evening, and private classes that can be taken on your own schedule. I am a very busy person, so it was great that they offered an evening course in business Japanese that fit my schedule. My classmates are friendly and motivate me to learn Japanese.

What you need to know about learning Japanese

What kind of workplaces are conducive to the retention and success of foreign businesspeople?

In the "Survey on Foreign Human Resources Working in Japan (2018)" conducted by JAPAN ASSOCIATION FOR PROMOTION OF INTERNATIONALIZATION(JAPI), it was found that the average length of service in Japan for foreign employees is only two years.

Broadly speaking, the top reasons for this fact are the same as for Japanese employees, such as dissatisfaction with treatment, human relationships with superiors or colleagues, and career development. In many cases, the reason for this is not so much about the foreign employees themselves, but rather the lack of support and systems in the workplace that accepts them.

In workplaces where foreign employees are established, (1) there is a culture and system in place that proactively supports foreign employees. In addition, the foreign employees who have established and are active in the workplace have (2) Japanese language knowledge, communication skills, and the skills to behave appropriately in a different culture.

Objective learning goals

In order to promote the retention and success of foreign employees, JLPT N2 or higher is the general target level for the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Generally speaking, it takes 600-800 hours of study to reach the JLPT N2 level, but at TCJ, we aim to achieve this level in 400-600 hours of study.

Japanese-Language Proficiency Test(JLPT)
It is the most well-known proficiency test administered in 86 countries and regions, including Japan. It is used by many educational institutions and Japanese companies as a document to prove Japanese language proficiency. The test is divided into two parts: "reading" (characters, vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension) and "listening" (listening comprehension), and answers are given on a mark-sheet format.

General level and estimated study time

Level Study hours Kanji Vocabulary Indicator
N1 900~1200 hrs. 2,000 10,000 Able to understand Japanese in different types of situation.
N2 600~800 hrs. 1,000 6,000 Not only in daily situations, but also understanding some Japanese used in a wider range of situations.
N3 450~600 hrs. 600 3,000 Able to understand Japanese used in daily situations to a certain extent
N4 300~400 hrs. 300 1,500 Able to understand basic Japanese
N5 ~150 hrs. 100 1,000 Able to understand basic Japanese to a certain extent

Common concerns and explanations about Japanese language for foreign employees

Answer
JLPT is generally recognized, but due to the characteristics of the test content, the test only guarantees the ability of listen and reading among the four Japanese language skills. However, After they join a company and start working, they will need the ability to communicate with Japanese employees, and to write a lot of e-mails and SNS. From a business perspective, it is no exaggeration to say that speaking and writing skills are the most important abilities. It is one of the most common misconceptions that ‘Passing the JLPT= High Japanese language skills. Many TCJ students also aim to acquire the ability to speak and write through OUTPUT-oriented classes, so that they can communicate more smoothly with Japanese employees.

Answer
This may be due to their lack of basic Japanese language skills, resulting in an inability to accurately understand the content of the instructions or to fully convey the nuances of the instructions. Even if they understand the vocabulary and grammar, they will not be able to correctly understand the speaker's intentions unless they can read the actual context of the sentence, including the indicative words and tenses, and recognize the speaker's cultural background. This problem can be solved by devising a way to confirm the content of instructions when they can't understand, and by providing opportunities to relearn basic Japanese skills.

Answer
Even if they already have a high level of Japanese language skills, there are many foreign employees who left their jobs because they cannot adapt well to the workplace. This is not only due to the company, but also partly due to the foreign employee's own cross-cultural adaptability (= social skills). Business manners can be interpreted as part of these social skills. In particular, in order to work in a different country, it is necessary for them to have the skills to understand different cultures, accept others, and to express themselves appropriately. TCJ offers our own social classes for foreign businesspeople to enhance their ability to understand and adjust to other people with different cultures and backgrounds, and it is provided to all students.
