Insurance (Student Visa Holders only)

National Health Insurance

In order to enjoy a safe and secure student life in Japan, please make sure to join the national health insurance system in Japan. Students who have entered Japan on a student visa are required to apply for the National Health Insurance when they register at the city/town hall.
If you are a member of the national health insurance, you will pay 30% of the total medical expenses if you visit a hospital or clinic for illness or injury. 70% of the total medical expenses will be covered by the insurance.

If you move to a new address, you will need to apply for a new insurance card at the city/town hall of your new address. Please submit your old National Health Insurance Card to the municipal office of your new address to receive the new insurance card. If you do not follow this procedure, you will not be able to apply for the National Health Insurance.

If you do not do this procedure, you will not be able to apply for the National Health Insurance. If you have any questions, please ask the TCJ staff.

International Student Insurance

In addition to National health insurance, students can take out international student insurance for additional peace of mind. For students on a student visa, the cost of international student insurance is included in the tuition fee.

With the international student insurance, you can receive the difference between the 30% of the cost of the insurance paid through the National Health Insurance and the amount of 3,000 yen or more (except for pre-existing conditions and dental treatment).

(e.g.) If a student breaks his or her bone and the total cost of medical treatment and medication is 30,000 yen, the student will receive the balance of the insurance fee.
If you are enrolled in National Health Insurance, you will only have to pay 9,000 yen. In addition, if you are enrolled in foreign student insurance, 6,000 yen will be refunded and you will only have to pay 3,000 yen on your own.

The insurance includes liability coverage as well as medical expenses for one’s own illness or injury.
This applies when international students injure another person by accident,
or when they damage property and are liable for compensation.
(The amount to be paid by the individual is 3,000 yen per accident.)

Previous accidents:
・A car was waiting at the traffic light and the cyclist dragged the side mirror.
The cyclist was charged for the repair.
・On a road without traffic lights, a cyclist collided with another cyclist.
The first party had to pay for medical treatment.
・A student broke a window in a common area in the dormitory and paid for the repair.

Accidents involving bicycles are relatively common.
To avoid accidents, make sure you understand the Japanese traffic rules.

Even if you take precautions, you cannot be sure that accidents and problems will not occur.
Sometimes insurance can solve the problem, so please do not worry alone, but consult with the school.
