Popular Lessons and Hobbies in Japan: From Children to Adults
In Japan, people of all ages enjoy taking lessons and pursuing hobbies. These activities offer many benefits, such as gaining new knowledge and skills, maintaining good health, and expanding social connections. Some skills learned through lessons may even develop into lifelong hobbies.
Recently, online classes have become increasingly popular, making it possible to explore various fields from the comfort of home.
This article introduces popular lessons and hobbies in Japan, focusing separately on those enjoyed by children and adults.
The Popularity of Lessons in Japan
For a long time, people in Japan have valued the concept of lifelong learning. As a result, many children take lessons outside of school to develop new skills and interests.
Children often start lessons with the goal of learning sports, arts, and manners. It is not unusual for young children to participate in multiple lessons at the same time.
Lessons are not limited to children; they are also a popular choice among adults in Japan. Many adults spend their free time after work or on their days off learning foreign languages, participating in sports, or taking courses to obtain professional qualifications. Others begin new lessons or hobbies as a way to maintain their health and relieve stress.
In recent years, online classes have become increasingly popular, allowing people to explore a wider range of fields from the comfort of their homes.

Yoga
Yoga is one of the most popular wellness activities in Japan. It aims to improve the balance between the mind and body by combining breathing techniques with various poses.
Yoga not only helps relieve shoulder stiffness caused by desk work and lack of exercise, but also provides relaxation benefits. Since many beginner-friendly classes are available, even people with little exercise experience can start practicing yoga with ease.
Recently, online yoga classes have also become popular, allowing more people to practice yoga from the comfort of their homes.
Pilates
Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on strengthening the core muscles. Although it may seem similar to yoga, Pilates places greater emphasis on controlling muscle movements and maintaining proper body alignment.
Many people take Pilates classes to improve their posture and help prevent back pain, making it increasingly popular among people of all ages.
It is an excellent activity for those who want to build a healthier and stronger body.
Golf
Golf is one of the most popular sports among adults in Japan.
It is often enjoyed as a way to build relationships with colleagues and business associates, making it a classic hobby among office workers. In recent years, golf lessons designed for younger generations and women have become increasingly popular, making the sport more accessible to beginners.
Golf is a sport that can be enjoyed throughout life, regardless of age. It not only helps people stay active but also provides opportunities to make new friends and expand their social circles.
Cooking Classes
Cooking classes are popular among people of all skill levels, from beginners who want to learn the basics to those hoping to develop professional-level skills.
Many cooking schools offer a wide variety of courses, including Japanese, Western, Chinese, and baking classes. They are recommended for people who want to expand their cooking repertoire or develop healthier eating habits.
Furthermore, cooking classes provide opportunities to interact with other participants, making them a great way to meet new people and build friendships.
Flower Arranging
Flower arranging has become increasingly popular in recent years. It is the art of creating beautiful arrangements using fresh flowers.
Participants can enjoy seasonal flowers while developing their sense of color and design. The arrangements created during class can be taken home, allowing people to brighten their living spaces with their own floral creations.
For some people, flower arranging becomes more than just a hobby, and they choose to pursue professional certifications to further develop their skills.
Foreign Language Learning
Learning foreign languages such as English, Chinese, and Korean is a popular choice among adults in Japan.
People study foreign languages for a variety of reasons. Some learn a language to prepare for overseas travel, while others hope to improve their career opportunities or simply have an interest in foreign cultures.
In recent years, the number of online tutors has increased, making it easier than ever to practice with native speakers from the comfort of home. Learning a foreign language also provides a deeper understanding of the culture and customs of the countries where it is spoken.
Popular Lessons for Children in Japan
Swimming
Swimming lessons are one of the most popular after-school activities for children in Japan.
Because swimming uses the entire body, it is an effective way to build strength and improve cardiovascular fitness. In addition, becoming comfortable in the water and learning how to swim are important life skills that can help keep children safe.
Many swimming schools also offer classes for preschoolers, which is one of the reasons swimming has remained popular in Japan for many years.
Soccer
Soccer is one of the most popular sports for both boys and girls in Japan. Although baseball was long considered the country’s most popular sport, soccer has become just as popular in recent years, thanks to the success of professional leagues, the national team, and the influence of anime and manga.
Playing soccer helps children develop communication and teamwork skills, as it requires them to cooperate with their teammates. In addition, running across the field helps improve their physical fitness and endurance.
Local soccer clubs and schools can be found throughout Japan, making it easy for children of all ages and skill levels to get started.
Tennis
Tennis helps children develop not only their physical abilities but also their concentration and decision-making skills.
Since tennis can be played both individually and in doubles, it helps children develop the ability to think and make decisions on their own during a game.
In recent years, the number of tennis schools and programs for children has increased, making it easier for children of all ages to start playing tennis.
書道: Shodō (Japanese Calligraphy)
Japanese calligraphy, also known as shodō, is one of Japan’s traditional cultural arts. Practicing calligraphy helps children improve their handwriting while developing concentration and patience by writing characters with a brush.
Even in the modern age, when people have more opportunities to type on computers and smartphones, the importance and appreciation of beautiful handwriting remain unchanged.
Calligraphy is a popular lesson for children because they can develop practical skills while learning about Japanese culture.
Piano
Piano has been one of the most popular lessons for children in Japan for decades.
Learning the piano helps children develop musical skills, such as reading music and a sense of rhythm, while also encouraging the habit of practicing consistently.
Many piano schools hold recitals, where children can experience a sense of accomplishment by achieving their goals, helping them build confidence. In addition, piano is an ideal lesson for nurturing creativity and emotional sensitivity while enjoying music.
Dance
Dance has become more popular in recent years as a lesson for children.
There are a variety of dance styles, such as hip-hop, jazz, and ballet, allowing children to choose the one that best suits their interests.
Dance helps children develop self-expression and physical abilities through movement. Furthermore, practicing with classmates gives children opportunities to develop teamwork skills.
Tips for Choosing the Right Lesson
When choosing a lesson, the most important thing is to choose something that you or your child are genuinely interested in. Starting something simply because someone recommended it may make it difficult to continue in the long term.
Other important factors to consider include the cost of tuition, accessibility, and the frequency of classes. Many schools and classes offer free trial lessons, so trying one first is highly recommended to get a sense of the atmosphere.
Throughout my life, I have experienced a variety of lessons, including piano, calligraphy, and cram school classes as a child, as well as tennis, swimming, kyūdō, badminton, baking classes, and Chinese and Korean language classes as an adult. Especially the lessons I started as an adult were based on my own interests and desire to try something new, making them enjoyable experiences that opened my eyes to new possibilities.
When taking classes, the outcome is not the only factor that matters. The process of developing skills and acquiring new knowledge is equally valuable. The key is to choose an activity that aligns with one’s interests and remain engaged throughout the learning process.
Lessons provide opportunities not only to acquire new knowledge and skills but also to build connections with others and enrich daily life. New learning experiences can contribute to personal growth and create a more fulfilling lifestyle.
