For more than 35 years since its establishment, TCJ has been contributing to the development of global human resources by providing high-quality Japanese language education for foreign businesspeople seeking to build their careers in Japan and for international students seeking to enter universities and graduate schools in Japan.
Currently, we operate one of the largest Japanese language courses for working and living people in Japan, with students from more than 80 countries enrolled at any given time. More than half of the students are enrolled for business purposes (technical, humanities, international visas, highly professional visas, intra-company transfers, diplomatic service, education, etc.). In addition, a large number of students participate in classes online from rural areas and overseas.
TCJ offers education from students with zero Japanese language skills to levels of JLPT N1 or higher. The scope of study includes not only training in the four Japanese language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing, but also acquisition of vocabulary frequently used in business situations, use of Japanese in real work situations, honorific and humble language, business manners, and more.
Our carefully selected professional Japanese language instructors help foreign businesspersons active in Japan and around the world to improve their Japanese language skills in a short period of time.

2. Top level teacher quality
There is a reason for the high quality of TCJ’s Japanese language education.
TCJ offers a Japanese language teacher training course that boasts one of the highest numbers of graduates in Japan. TCJ offers a high-quality Japanese language education curriculum based on know-how cultivated through teacher training, and carefully selects highly skilled and motivated Japanese language teachers from among the many graduates of our training courses. Based on the solid teaching skills we have cultivated over many years of teacher training, we have developed our own “Competency Model for Japanese Language Teachers”. Based on the competency model, we regularly monitor all teachers’ classes to maintain and improve the quality of education. In addition, students also complete a quarterly survey on the content of their teachers’ classes, and feedback is provided to all teachers.
In addition, TCJ has developed its own teaching materials and has a teaching method that utilizes these materials. TCJ’s courses, which enable learners to quickly and reliably improve their Japanese language skills, are highly regarded by many business people.

Curriculum aiming to improve the four Japanese
language skills
It is necessary to comprehensively improve the four Japanese language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing in order for foreigners to settle down and become active in Japan. In class-lesson-type classes, students are constantly engaged in speech, helping them to improve their conversational skills while deepening mutual understanding with classmates from different cultural backgrounds.
To improve the four Japanese language skills
At TCJ, review is done through self-study, and a professional Japanese language instructor manages your progress and output to enhance the learning effect. All of the video lectures are composed of conversational scenes that use real-life situations in which Japanese is actually used. This is a great way to learn new sentence patterns and grammar.
POINT1 Easy to understand because you learn through conversational scenes.
POINT2 Unlimited viewing for 6 months, so you can watch as many times as you want.
POINT3 Each unit is 5-10 minutes long, so you can learn in your spare time.
Video Japanese courses are produced and supervised by TCJ’s professional instructors. The video lectures focus on conversational scenes based on real-life situations in which Japanese is used. You can also practice (shadowing) by yourself, which is effective for improving your conversational skills.
Beginner level
Levels: N5, N4, N3, Hiragana Katakana
Duration: Unlimited viewing during the course
The textbook breaks down the content of study by “function” of the Japanese language. This is a small unit-type original Japanese language textbook developed by TCJ in pursuit of learning effectiveness, which aims for efficient learning by steadily building up grammar and sentence patterns one by one.
Teaching Method to Promote Rapid Acquisition of
Japanese Language skill.
TCJ’s teaching method is the Direct Method, which teaches Japanese in Japanese. By not using the students’ mother tongue, TCJ helps them get used to Japanese quickly and acquire the habit of thinking and using Japanese.
We always aim for output-oriented learning in lessons, where the students speak at least 70% of the total. By encouraging students to produce a lot of output, practical Japanese can be acquired quickly.
We also encourage collaborative learning to create synergy among students. It encourages students to ask questions and explain to each other.
The teacher motivates the students and provides coaching-style support to help them reach their learning goals.
4. Visualization of achievement through comprehensive
assessment of Japanese language skills
Appropriate and regular assessments are essential for checking learning achievement. TCJ has developed our own Can-do lists for the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing, based on the levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and the CEFR (JF Standard), and uses them to accurately assess learners’ Japanese language skills.
TCJ Learning Cycle
In addition to regular academic tests, students and teachers evaluate each other using a list to objectively grasp student’s current level of achievement, especially in the area of “speaking ability,” which is most important in the business situation. Teachers also provide learning advice to each students through feedback regularly.

As a tax accountant, I advise companies on mergers and acquisitions (M&A). I came to Japan in 2013 as an expatriate, and now, a few years later, I work in accounting at a Japanese company.
TCJ has the most flexible class hours, especially in the evenings (7:00-9:00 PM), which is perfect for a working person like me. Also, the management team is very understanding of each student’s priorities and needs. Most importantly, the “student’s normal work” is given top priority. Each student is treated with respect and given individual attention. The location is also very convenient (only 30 seconds from the Shinanomachi station gates on the Chuo-Sobu line).
I am currently doing some freelance work online on my own.In terms of professional development, I would like to work for an international marketing or PR firm in the future. With my knowledge of Japanese, I believe I will be able to gain a more comprehensive understanding of Japanese culture. Of course, it will also make my daily life in Tokyo easier.
TCJ offers a wide variety of classes to meet the diverse needs of students, not only in terms of Japanese language proficiency level. In addition, online courses are also available, which has allowed me to have more flexibility in my daily life!
I’ve been to a few other schools before, but the staff at TCJ is the nicest I’ve encountered. TCJ truly cares about education and wants their students to succeed. TCJ has morning, evening, and private classes that can be taken on your own schedule. I am a very busy person, so it was great that they offered an evening course in business Japanese that fit my schedule. My classmates are friendly and motivate me to learn Japanese.

What you need to know about learning Japanese
What kind of workplaces are conducive to the retention and
success of foreign businesspeople?
In the “Survey on Foreign Human Resources Working in Japan (2018)” conducted by JAPAN ASSOCIATION FOR PROMOTION OF INTERNATIONALIZATION(JAPI), it was found that the average length of service in Japan for foreign employees is only two years.
Broadly speaking, the top reasons for this fact are the same as for Japanese employees, such as dissatisfaction with treatment, human relationships with superiors or colleagues, and career development.
In many cases, the reason for this is not so much about themselves, but rather the lack of support and systems in the workplace that accepts them. In workplaces where foreign employees are established, (1) there is a culture and system in place that proactively supports foreign employees. In addition, the foreign employees who have established and are active in the workplace have (2) Japanese language knowledge, communication skills, and the skills to behave appropriately in a different culture.
Objective learning goals
In order to promote the retention and success of foreign employees, JLPT N2 or higher is the general target level for the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Generally speaking, it takes 600-800 hours of study to reach the JLPT N2 level, but at TCJ, we aim to achieve this level in 400-600 hours of study.
Japanese Language
Proficiency Test (JLPT)
It is the most well-known proficiency test administered in 86 countries and regions, including Japan. It is used by many educational institutions and Japanese companies as a document to prove Japanese language proficiency. The test is divided into two parts: “reading” (characters, vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension) and “listening” (listening comprehension), and answers are given on a mark-sheet format.
Common concerns and explanations about Japanese
language for foreign employees
Q.
We hired a foreign employee who passed JLPT N1, but actually
he/she cannot speak Japanese well after entering the company.
he/she cannot speak Japanese well after entering the company.
JLPT is generally recognized, but due to the characteristics of the test content, the test only guarantees the ability of listen and reading among the four Japanese language skills. However, After they join a company and start working, they will need the ability to communicate with Japanese employees, and to write a lot of e-mails and SNS. From a business perspective, it is no exaggeration to say that speaking and writing skills are the most important abilities. It is one of the most common misconceptions that ‘Passing the JLPT= High Japanese language skills. Many TCJ students also aim to acquire the ability to speak and write through OUTPUT-oriented classes, so that they can communicate more smoothly with Japanese employees.
Q.
I’m giving work instructions to my foreign employees clearly, but they don’t seem to be getting correctly, and misunderstandings are occurring in many cases.
This may be due to their lack of basic Japanese language skills, resulting in an inability to accurately understand the content of the instructions or to fully convey the nuances of the instructions. Even if they understand the vocabulary and grammar, they will not be able to correctly understand the speaker's intentions unless they can read the actual context of the sentence, including the indicative words and tenses, and recognize the speaker's cultural background. This problem can be solved by devising a way to confirm the content of instructions when they can't understand, and by providing opportunities to relearn basic Japanese skills.
Q.
They can’t seem to get along with Japanese employees because they
can’t make up for the differences in culture and mentality.
can’t make up for the differences in culture and mentality.
Even if they already have a high level of Japanese language skills, there are many foreign employees who left their jobs because they cannot adapt well to the workplace. This is not only due to the company, but also partly due to the foreign employee's own cross-cultural adaptability (= social skills). Business manners can be interpreted as part of these social skills. In particular, in order to work in a different country, it is necessary for them to have the skills to understand different cultures, accept others, and to express themselves appropriately. TCJ offers our own social classes for foreign businesspeople to enhance their ability to understand and adjust to other people with different cultures and backgrounds, and it is provided to all students.
