CLUB TCJ Calligraphy Held!
Mostly First-Time Participants Gathered for a Special Cultural Experience
On Friday, February 20, 2026, TCJ Tokyo proudly hosted the “CLUB TCJ Calligraphy Event.” Approximately 30 students participated in the event, representing a wide range of levels from beginner to advanced. As many attendees were experiencing Japanese calligraphy for the very first time, the venue was filled with excitement and anticipation.
Introduction to Calligraphy Tools and Basic Rules
Since most participants were new to calligraphy, the session began with an introduction to the essential tools. Students learned about the brush (fude), small brush, ink, inkstone, calligraphy paper, underlay sheet, and paperweight, as well as how to use each item properly.
In addition, participants were introduced to the fundamental principles of Japanese calligraphy, including:
・Tome (stopping the brush firmly at the end of a stroke)
・Hane (a slight upward flick at the end of a stroke)
・Harai (a smooth sweeping finish)
・Proper stroke order
・Maintaining balance with an imaginary center line
・The idea of “one decisive attempt” (traditionally not rewriting the final piece)
These foundational elements, commonly taught in Japanese elementary schools, offered participants a deeper understanding of the art form.
Writing Favorite Kanji
As the event took place during the season of Risshun (the beginning of spring), participants first practiced writing the kanji character for “Spring” (春). Afterward, students were invited to choose and write a kanji character that held personal meaning for them. Characters such as “Color” (色), “Sunshine” (陽), “Evolution” (進化), “Air” (空気), “Connection” (縁), “Smile” (笑), “Heart” (心), and “It’s okay” (大丈夫) were selected. The room was filled with warmth as each participant carefully practiced their chosen character multiple times. Their dedication and concentration left a strong impression.
Voices from Participants
Participants shared positive feedback; “Practicing calligraphy makes me feel refreshed.” “I practiced writing kanji in my notebook before coming today.” “I’m happy I could write my favorite kanji.”…The event concluded successfully in a lively and welcoming atmosphere.
We sincerely thank everyone who participated and made the event such a meaningful experience.
