In this article, we will introduce 1) how to say to apply for accommodation at the front desk when staying at a hotel in Japan, and 2) useful sentence forms that can be used in various situations if you know them.
Request Accommodation
宿泊 Accommodation(しゅくはく:syukuhaku )is to stay at a hotel, ryokan, guesthouse, and so on. When you have made a reservation, you say this at the front desk.
・予約しています(よやくしています:yoyaku shiteimasu)。:I have a reservation.
・Leeです。(Lee desu): My name is Lee. (Please state your name.)
・パスポートです(ぱすぽーとです:Passport desu):Here is my passport.
If you do not have a reservation, when you request an overnight stay at the front desk, say the following.
・予約していません。(よやくしていません:yoyaku shiteimasen):I have no reservation.
・今日、部屋はありますか。(きょうへやはありますか:kyoheyawa arimasuka):Is there a room available for me today?
・大人一人です(おとな ひとりです:otonahitori desu):One adult, please.
・一泊です(いっぱくです:ippakudesu):One night, please.
・部屋を見たいです(へやをみたいです:heya wo mitaidesu):I’d like to see the room.
These are words used when applying for accommodation at a hotel.
When changing a reservation, say the following.
・予約を変更したいです。(よやくをへんこうしたいです:yoyaku wo henkou shitaidesu):I would like to change my reservation.
・予約をキャンセルしたいです(よやくをきゃんせるしたいです:yoyaku wo cancel shitaidesu): I ‘d like to cancel my reservation.
・予約を確認したいです(よやくをかくにんしたいです:yoyaku wo kakunin shitaidesu): I ‘d like to confirm my reservation.
Simple and useful phrases that can be used in a variety of ways
Here are some simple and useful sentence forms that you can say various things if you know them. Once you know these sentence forms, you can say a variety of things by simply changing the words in the xxxx part of the sentence. Please try them out. There are four sentence forms introduced here.
1 xxx おねがいします: xxx, please.
2 xxx がありますか: Is xxx available?
3 xxx ません: do not, cannot, or there is no xxx
4 xxx てください: Would you xxx, please?
xxx おねがいします: xxx, please.
xxxx おねがいします(onegai shimasu)is a polite way of asking someone to do something.
・チェックイン おねがいします。
(ちぇっくいん おねがいします:check in onegai shimasu): Check in, please.
・チェックアウト おねがいします。
(ちぇっくあうと おねがいします:check out onegai shimasu): Check out, please.
・鍵 おねがいします。
(かぎ おねがいします:kagi onegaishimasu): Room key, please.
・ルームサービスおねがいします
(るーむさーびす おねがいします:room service onegaishimasu): Room service, please.
・タクシーおねがいします
(たくしーおねがいします:taxi onegaishimasu): Call a taxi, please.
・領収書おねがいします
(りょうしゅうしょおねがいします:ryosyusyo onegaishimasu):Receipt please.
・寒いです。毛布おねがいします。
(さむいです。もうふをおねがいします:samuidesu.moufu onegaishimasu):It is cold. Please give me a blanket.
・英語でおねがいします。
(えいごでおねがいします:eigo de onegaishimasu): Would you speak in English, please?
・わかりません。もういちどおねがいします。
(wakarimasen mouichdo onegaishimasu): I don’t understand. Would you say that again, please?
xxx がありますか: Is there xxx available?
xxxがありますか(xxxga arimasuka) is used to ask if an object or place is available.
・wi-fiがありますか
(wi-fiがありますか:wi-fi ga arimasuka): Is there wi-fi available?
・ATMがありますか
(えーてぃーえむがありますか:ATM ga arimasuka ): Is there an ATM available?
・地図がありますか
(ちずがありますか:chizu ga arimasuka): Is there a map?
・コンビニがありますか
(こんびにがありますか:convini ga arimasuka): Is there a convenience store?
・ランドリーがありますか
(らんどりーがありますか:laundry ga arimasuka): Is there a laundry available?
・温泉がありますか
(おんせんがありますか:onsen ga arimasuka): Is there a hot spring?
・貸切風呂がありますか
(かしきりぶろがありますか:kashikiriburo ga arimasuka): Is there a private bath available?
・喫煙所がありますか
(きつえんじょがありますか:kitsuenjo ga arimasuka): Is there a smoking area?
・部屋にアメニティがありますか
(へやにあめにてぃがありますか:heya ni amenithi ga arimasuka):Are there amenities in the room?
xxx ません: do not, cannot, or there is no xxx
xxxません(xxxmasen)means do not, cannot, or there is no xxx. This expression can be used to tell the hotel staff that something is wrong.
・エアコン/シャワー/トイレ/ネットが使えません。
(えあこん/しゃわー/といれ/ねっとがつかえません:aircon/shower/toilet/net ga tsukaemasen): The air conditioner/shower/toilet/internet is not available.
・ドア/まど/かぎが開きません
(どあ/まど/かぎがあきません:door/mado/kagi ga akimasen): The door/window/locks will not open.
・水/お湯が出ません
(みず/おゆがでません:mizu/oyu ga demasen): Water/hot water does not come out.
・タオル/歯ブラシ/かぎがありません
(たおる/はぶらし/かぎがありません :towel/haburashi/kagi ga arimasen): There is no towel/toothbrush/key.
・電気/テレビ/エアコンがつきません
(でんき/てれび/えあこんがつきません :denki/terebi/aiecon ga tsukimasen): Electricity/TV/air conditioning does not work.
・部屋に入れません
(へやにはいれません:heya ni hairemasen): I can’t get in my room.
xxx てください: Would you xxx, please?
xxx てください(xxx tekudasai)is a way of saying that you are asking the other person to do something you want him or her to do.
・すぐ来てください
(すぐきてください:sugukitekudasai): Please come immediately.
・エアコン/テレビ/ドライヤーが壊れています。みてください。
(えあこん/てれび/どらいやーがこわれています。みてください:aircon/TV/dryer ga kowareteimasu. mitekudasai) : The air conditioner/TV/dryer is broken. Please check.
・荷物を預かってください
(にもつをあずかってください:nimotsu wo azukattekudasai): I have my luggage here to be stored.
・タオルを換えてください
(たおるをかえてください:towel wo kaetekudasai): Please change towels.
・部屋の掃除をしてください
(へやのそうじをしてください:heya no souji wo shitekudasai): Please clean the room.
