In language education, each teacher’s journey is a distinctive piece, shaped by passion, dedication, and purpose. In this article, we hear from three dedicated educators, who we will refer to as M.H., N.C., and T.K., who share their experiences and perspectives on the school’s teaching approach, the supportive and inclusive environment they foster, and the success stories they’ve witnessed.

They discuss the distinctive features that set TCJ apart from other schools, including a focus on practical language use, the flexibility of hybrid classes, and a commitment to constant improvement. They also highlight the school’s dedication to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment, with regular counseling sessions and a tailored approach to meet individual students’ needs.

The interview provides a glimpse into the school’s success stories, the ongoing support and feedback students receive, and the ways in which the school maintains a sense of community. The teachers also share their strategies for motivating students and addressing the challenges they may face in their Japanese language studies.

Join us as we explore the inner workings of TCJ, a school that is not just about teaching a language, but also about nurturing a diverse community of learners, each with their own unique journey.

Please tell us your name and where you’re from.

Teacher 3: My name is N.C., and I’m from Aomori Prefecture, which is famous for its apples.

How would you describe the teaching approach and methodology used at TCJ?

M.H.: We use a direct method primarily in Japanese, with some English assistance at the beginner level.

What sets TCJ apart from other schools?

N.C.: The diverse backgrounds of our students. We have learners from all over the world in the same classes, so it’s very interesting to hear various perspectives and stories.

M.H.: TCJ stands out because our classes focus on the practical use of the language rather than just learning grammar. We offer hybrid classes to ensure the quality of education remains consistent between in-person and online learning. Students can change classes to match their evolving lifestyles and proficiency levels. We are dedicated to delivering high-quality teaching from full-time to part-time instructors, constantly striving for improvement.

Can you share some success stories of previous students who have achieved proficiency in Japanese after studying at TCJ?

T.K.: We have had success stories such as improved scores on the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students) and successful admission to first-choice universities, as well as jobs at Japanese companies.

M.H.: We conduct counseling sessions every semester, listening closely to students’ living situations and any issues in their classes. We provide advice and make improvements where necessary.

How do you create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds?

M.H.: We conduct counseling sessions every semester, listening closely to students’ living situations and any issues in their classes. We provide advice and make improvements where necessary.

How do you assess and tailor your teaching methods to meet individual students' needs and learning styles?

T.K.: Currently, I am in charge of the study abroad course, so I generally maintain consistent teaching and assessment methods. However, if there are many students with different backgrounds. I adjust by simplifying speech and lowering the difficulty.

M.H.: Since our students have diverse needs, from those studying for the JLPT to those learning for fun, we minimize class-wide tests and assignments and focus on providing additional tasks for students who want to challenge themselves. Our approach to assessment is more about offering specific advice on what students can do to improve, rather than just assigning grades.

How do you encourage and motivate students to stay committed to their Japanese language studies?

N.C.: In our class lessons, we make sure to choose topics that everyone can relate to. We discuss common experiences in Japan, share “only in Japan” stories, or talk about the climate of each student’s home country, so that everyone can participate in the conversation.

What kind of ongoing support and feedback do students receive during their time at the school?

T.K.: Students receive support such as access to their own web page (My Page) and platforms like Google Classroom from the school. From teachers, they receive general support and feedback.

N.C.: We provide support and guidance similar to what one might receive from a family member. Everyone at TCJ is genuinely caring and provides assistance with questions and guidance for further studies.

N.C.: The friendly atmosphere within the school encourages students and teachers to communicate freely. We also use Slack for communication among teachers.

How do you address the challenges that students may face while learning Japanese?

M.H.: We make sure to listen carefully to where students are struggling and strive to reduce any stress they may be experiencing. Our goal is to provide appropriate advice and support to help them overcome difficulties.

N.C.: I believe that the most important thing is to maintain motivation as much as possible. So, I try to find and highlight the positive aspects, no matter how small they may be. I offer encouragement and support, walking together with the students one step at a time, with an attitude of “You can do it!”
