JLPT N3: Essential Strategies for Reading Comprehension
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N3 is the middle level of the five-level JLPT scale. According to the official JLPT website, this level indicates the ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations to a certain extent.
In particular, the reading skills required for the JLPT N3 include the ability to:
・read and understand written materials on familiar, everyday topics
・grasp summary information, such as newspaper headlines
・read slightly more complex texts encountered in daily life and understand the main points when supportive expressions or paraphrasing are available
However, simply reading these descriptions may not clearly convey what level of reading ability is actually required.
In this article, we take a closer look at the expected reading level and common test tendencies for JLPT N3. We also introduce effective study methods, recommended materials, and key strategies to help learners strengthen their reading comprehension and work toward their goals in a clear and approachable way.
Reading Comprehension Needed for JLPT N3
The JLPT N3 level is considered the entry point to the intermediate stage, following the beginner levels of N5 and N4. In the reading section, examinees are assessed on their ability to understand passages written in relatively natural Japanese.
More specifically, the exam evaluates whether learners can accurately identify necessary information after reading texts commonly encountered in everyday situations, such as at school or in the workplace.
The reading section at the N3 level features a wide range of text types, including short notices and announcements, emails, explanatory texts, and even slightly longer, essay-style passages. While the vocabulary and grammar themselves are not dramatically more difficult than those at the N4 level, the skills required at N3 go beyond basic comprehension. Learners are expected to understand connections between sentences, the overall flow of topics, and the writer’s intentions.
Comparisons with the N4 level:
・Reading passages become longer and more difficult
・The time allocated for the Language Knowledge and Reading section increases from 55 minutes at N4 to 70 minutes at N3.
・Longer passages appear for the first time, including texts of around 550 characters.
・More words are written in kanji
・More written-style language is used
・More abstract vocabulary appears
・Grammar patterns with similar meanings are tested
(e.g., mono / koto / wake, megutte / tsuite / taishite / kanshite)
As shown above, at the N3 level, it becomes difficult to rely on reading “roughly” or “by intuition” alone.
Reading Comprehension Strategies for JLPT N3
In the JLPT N3 reading section, examinees are expected to demonstrate the ability to comprehend the writer’s assertions and intentions while processing passages that contain a relatively high density of information. The question formats can generally be categorized into two types: content comprehension and information retrieval.
Short and Medium Passages: Content Comprehension
The reading materials for this section include explanatory texts, notices, emails, and simple letters. Short passages are approximately 100–200 characters, while medium-length passages are around 300–400 characters.
Common question types include:
・Referential expressions: identifying what words such as “kore” (this) or “sore” (that) refer to
・Reasons and purposes: understanding why a certain action was taken
・Main idea: identifying the writer’s main point or message
・Specific information: locating details based on the 5W1H framework (when, where, who, what, and how)
Referential expressions often point to a word or even an entire sentence introduced one or two lines earlier. Therefore, it is important to focus on meaningful segments, rather than individual words alone.
For questions related to reasons or purposes, recognizing key expressions such as “-node,” “-tame,” and “-you ni” can help identify the correct answer. When focusing on the main idea, learners should pay attention to summary expressions like “tsumari” and “yousuru ni,” which signal what the writer wants to emphasize.
For 5W1H-type questions, it is important to carefully read the keywords in the question and the surrounding parts of the passage, as the relevant information is usually located nearby.
Long Passages: Overall Comprehension
These questions assess your ability to understand the overall structure and the writer’s intentions after reading relatively long passages consisting of multiple paragraphs. The passages are typically around 500 characters in length and often include more abstract content.
Key strategies for this section include:
・Paying attention to conjunctions such as “shikashi,” “ippou,” and “tsumari”
・Identifying what each paragraph is mainly about
・Reading the questions first to clarify your reading purpose
Keeping these points in mind allows for more efficient processing of the text and clearer organization of information.
Information Retrieval: Practical Contexts
In this section, examinees are required to locate appropriate information from multiple sources, such as event flyers, website Q&A pages, or price lists.
First, clearly identify the purpose of the question—in other words, what information is being asked for. Next, focus on keywords related to that purpose and skip unnecessary details. Since questions may require comparing information across multiple materials, it is crucial to organize the conditions while reading and check each source carefully.
A Balanced Preparation for the JLPT N3 Success
The key to preparing for reading comprehension is to study vocabulary, grammar, and reading effectively. Reading itself can become a burden if there is a lack of fundamental knowledge, such as vocabulary or grammar.
The following learning flow is recommended for developing reading skills:
1. Practice identifying what is written and the main idea in short sentences.
2. Become familiar with question formats by using practice materials.
3. Always review the reasons why an answer is correct or incorrect.
4. Repeatedly review and practice new vocabulary and grammar encountered for the first time.
In addition, practicing how to switch between careful reading and speed reading, as well as engaging in timed practice, is highly effective. Developing a habit of reading news articles or blogs and becoming familiar with Japanese texts in daily life will gradually help improve reading comprehension skills.
